Review: Book Binding

I didn't think a session of book binding could be so inspiring but after a session of learning some basic techniques, I felt an entirely new arm of graphic design had opened up. We were shown examples of fanzines, flip books and other various creative products. Just seeing how they all worked, with their various folds and pop ups gave an entirely new dimension to the design. The physical paper was being considered, for example a series of mountain and valley folds were used for a skiing booklet. Obviously, the mountain folds tied in brilliantly with the idea of skiing.

The session also made me aware of paper. How to manipulate it and work with its grain. It made me consider paper thickness and type, and use one appropriate to my design. For my latest project, I could use quite a thick, rough paper to give quite a dirty, industrial feel.
