Review: Persepolis

Persepolis, a film that I hadn't heard about until a month or so ago. This week I had the opportunity to watch it. Initially I had no idea what it would be like, what it was about and whether I would even be interested. However, I was surprised as it turned out to be a well executed film with a fantastic storyline that really got you hooked.

The story is about an Iranian girl who talks of her past, the good times and the bad, from being a young girl to a young adult. Full of love, war, friends and enemies, the story really makes you understand how she felt. The visual style of the film seemed very dark, with rough, textured backgrounds and in black and white for the majority of the film. Even though the style was dark, happier moments in the film did feel happy. However, the dark and sad moments were really powerful and you could visually see how down she felt at certain moments. What is also particularly interesting is the mix of styles. At certain points it felt almost like an ancient Japanese painting and I would love to know the effect and reason for it.

Persepolis is definitely an interesting film and is one to consider for my next critical studies review where I will look more in depth into all aspects of the film.
