Le Gun Illustration Project

Le Gun stayed at Salford for 2 days and initiated a collaborative illustration project which was about Salford. I decided to take part briefly and was really glad I did. It was great to illustrate something towards a project without all the research and work that builds up to the final piece, and it allowed me to just go for it. I decided to illustrate a character to represent my view of Salford, before I arrived, as being a rough area. However, after living here for 5 weeks, I've noticed it isn't as bad as I thought (although it has its areas). Initially I used a thin marker to illustrate the stereotypical chav (skinhead, hoody, pants tucked in socks etc). However, I found myself trying to imitate other people's styles and knew that the pen wasn't working for me. I then decided to switch to one of my favourite medias, ink, and very quickly and loosely drew the same image. I allowed the ink to drip down slightly and felt that the rough, care free marks made the character appear rough, and looked as if he meant trouble.

The variety of illustration styles worked really well together and seeing it assembled looked very impressive. I particularly liked the viking boat as moments before I started, I was looking into viking design for my body map. I am a bit disappointed I couldn't stay until the end as I would of loved to see the final outcome, however, I felt I gained a lot just by seeing the various outcomes of other designers and students and trying it for myself.
