I think one main problem with the educational route to graphic design is grades and how sketchbooks have a mark scheme. Since school, I've naturally had a mindset that a sketchbook had to have X and Y to get the best marks and so I'd aim for that. However, a recent discussion with a tutor made me realise that a sketchbook is there to build up to a final design and that I should focus on having a good, original final piece instead of going for a top grade. The result is not only the correct mindset and approach to design work but also a good grade as the final piece and approach to it should naturally meet the requirements for a good grade.
I am glad I've realised this now and not when I go into a design career as changing my working methods now will mean I am better equipped for the working design world.
